Vuelta a Espaņa 2017 - Stage Two (Spoilers Allowed)

    Vuelta a Espaņa 2017

With the TTT under their belts, the peloton now has a race leader and a race leader's team that will likely be playing a safe game today during what is a clearly a Sprinter's stage.

Stage Two: Nîmes / Gruissan. Grand Narbonne. Aude, 203.4km

During this second French stage, the Red Jersey and his team will have to be extra careful as the route skirts The Med about a third of the way and one would not want to be caught out by crosswinds - a mistake here could be costly.

Once the risk of crosswinds passes, expect the Sprinter's teams to take the front and chase down any breakaways that may have taken a flyer during the interim. As some notable sprinters might have been caught in an unlucky echelon earlier, the possibility of an unexpected stage winner (perhaps from a team that "knows" crosswinds) could develop.

Some nervousness in the peloton, waiting to see the effect of the crosswinds.

No doubt, teams like QuickStep and Sky will assure they don't get caught-out.

Peloton has "weathered" the crosswinds and can now begin to set up for the sprint.

Some narrow road crashes - might lead to the first abandon of the race as injuries get sorted

Can't say I'm totally surprised that a QuickStep rider took this sprint.

Not so much of a sprint. He just rode away from the rest with 1 Km to go. Impressive bit of riding by him and QS to get into that position

Good bit of riding by Nibali. He got into the lead group and finished at +0 seconds whereas Aru, Froome, Majka etc came in at +8 seconds

Movistar is exceptionally happy with Fernandez being in the group at +8 and Soler in the group at +13. Rather either of them can actually compete for GC, who knows.
