    Kona Kapu Nervous Downhill

    Hi all,

I have put about 2000 miles on a well-used 1997 Kona Kapu. I am unsure of the year, but the frame is made of Columbus Genius. I am 6 foot and 170lbs. The bike is very nervous downhill. If I tense up my arms in the slightest, it is easy to go into a death wobble. If I ride no hands on flats, the front wheel wiggles side to side. I have never had these issues with other bikes (2011 Trek 2.1, 2015 Redline Conquest) and am wondering why it happens with the Kona.

Is the frame fatigued? Is the tubeset simply too light? Does it have the wrong fork on it? I really love the way this frame looks and performs on the climbs but I am ready to sell it because of how nervous on descents it is.

i don't really consider a '97 kona a vintage bike. and you're better off starting this in the wrenching or wheels subforum anyway -- more traffic in those two.

i have no idea, but i know where i would start before taking it to a high quality shop:

    - check alignment of wheel in fork
    - check hub adjustment and skewer function
    - check headset cups and fork crown race for fit and wear
    - check headset adjustment
    - check wheel true
    - check wheel dish
    - check spoke tension
    - check tire.
Yossarian: don't worry. nothing's going to happen to you that won't happen to the rest of us.
