Good video, the part where he barely tightens the expander to show what effect that has on the steerer (by not being able to move the bearing cover because the steerer has bulged) was great. Everyone should watch this.
Thanks for that! Nothing earth shattering about the information but it's nice to have and it was well explained and demonstrated. It's one thing to simply follow torque specs (and the like) but it always helps when there's a good how/why/etc. accompanying it.
I have the Specialized plugs on all my bikes with carbon steerers. They’re about 2 inches long and offer very good support of the steer tube. Cheap too at about $10.
I have to admit, I didn't realize that the compression plug could expand a carbon steerer like that. I just figured it simply bolstered the steerer to prevent it from collapsing under the focused forces of the stem.
