36 hole hub with 32 spokes

A question for the expert wheel builder?

Can rims with 32 holes be built with 36 hole hubs? Can a 32 spoke lacing pattern be used with 36 hole hubs? Will it be safe? Will it look wierd?

You can ALWAYS mate hubs and rims of different hole counts. All you have to do is have a number of spoke lengths on hand and be willing to put one in, see if it's the right length, and try another. Alternatively, you could use a CAD program to figure out what lengths and pattern would work. It will be safe if it's built well. It will look weird. It's pretty pointless - you will waste more time on this than the cost of buying the right rim or hub for building whatever wheel it is you want. Get the right parts, and sell the rest on eBay.
