Question about thru-axle wheels on road bike

Do they all require the use of an allen key? if I see a lever does that make it a quick release then?

There are a few different styles. Thru axle just means the wheel can't drop without pulling the axle out, but there are bolt in thru axles as well as quick release style through axles. Both do what they are supposed to, some prefer one style over another for weight vs aesthetics vs ease of use (i.e. tool-less).

I have them on my mountain bike front and front and rear on my Domane disc.
    1) On the mountain bike there is a lever that pivots like a QR lever but just allows you an angle to spin the axle out.
    2) On the Domane there are levers front and rear that you just grab and spin the axle off.

THe most impressive system I've encounteres is on the Focus bikes. It is adjustable and only requires 1/2 turn to remove the thru axle..

Focus - Bikes: R.A.T. / Rapid Axle Technology

I think thru axles are a good thing. It really stiffens up a fork and gives repeatablility on disk brakes to prevent rubbing

curious to which is more popular. lever based or hex key. seems like the hex key solution would take longer to change and you are forced to carry an extra tool you otherwise might not. trying to wrap my head around what advantages a hex key offers. Maybe some minimal security and aesthetics?

    Maybe less weight?
